What do you think of Universal?

I first got into this genre thanks to Universal's Frankenstein. However, I've since grown distant from my roots. Hammer just seems to be better to me. What do you think of Universal's golden age of...

Re: What do you think of Universal?

Well, until we got a program called Weirdo Theater up here in Canada (broadcast from North Dakota, I believe), my only connection with the Universal classics came from books and magazines, such as FM....

Re: What do you think of Universal?

Most of Universal's classic output had a contemporary setting. Sure, when we watched it in the 1960s-70s it gained some patina, but it was still the recent past. On the other hand, most of Hammer's...

Re: What do you think of Universal?

Growing up in the 60s and 70s I first saw the Universal horrors on friday nights and although scary they seemed safe, but when the Hammers started turning up the roof came off! All my friends at...

Re: What do you think of Universal?

I think it is dodgy to treat Universal's 30s and 40s output as though it were of an uniform stature.  Their 30s work were genre-defining and unequalled in terms of quality; and they seemed to be...

Re: What do you think of Universal?

Although I have soft spot for Universal, I enjoy Hammer more.

Re: What do you think of Universal?

I started out on the Universal movies and after a couple of years I got to watch the Hammer movies. I enjoy them both but give the edge to the Universal movies. I think they are just slightly better...

Re: What do you think of Universal?

Comparison is impossible and of no consequence. They are what they are. I love them all.

Re: What do you think of Universal?

I never felt the need to compare the studios directly, even though in my day one was "modern' and the other "classic." Now, of course, they're both well-removed in time, and each did something special...

Re: What do you think of Universal?

There always seemed to be a weird kind of critical warfare as to who produced the best horror films Universal, or Hammer. I never enter into this as I have a passion for both and would not discard one...

Re: What do you think of Universal?

The last three comments say it perfectly. I love them both. If pressed I'd have to give a slight edge to Universal, as that's where it all started for me, but I find the work of both studios equally...

Re: What do you think of Universal?

Both made some very good films, Hammer probably made more stinkers, and we probably wouldn't have had a Hammer if Uni hadn't been there first Russ

Re: What do you think of Universal?

What Russ said. And for me, the Hammers are often claustrophobic - lacking in sweep. Too many interiors, the few exteriors that we do get always looking the same, etc.

Re: What do you think of Universal?

Both made some excellent horror films. Universal probably made more. Both made some lousy horror films. I don't know....Universal might have made more of those too. But, as I've posted before...

I  love the colors and 19th century Überwald of  Hammer films. At best they look fabulous and are so much fun.

Re: What do you think of Universal?

Rick brings up a very good point. From a re-visiting standpoint it is easier to sit through classic Universals with their fast-moving storylines that rarely overstay their welcome than the occasional...

Re: What do you think of Universal?

I love them both for very different reasons. I think Universal probably had more of the big classics (FRANKENSTEIN, DRACULA, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA(1925,) THE MUMMY, THE WOLF MAN etc.) that are hard...
